PAGLIETA between the sea and the mountains
Paglieta: a town located on a hill (235 meters above sea level) south of the 115-kilometer-long Sangro River, in a panoramic position overlooking the Sangro Valley. To the east lies the Adriatic Sea (about 9 kilometers away) and to the west lies the Majella (about 30 kilometers), the second-highest peak in the Apennine mountain range.
Its territory covers 34.18 square kilometers and borders the following towns: Fossacesia to the north, Torino di Sangro to the northeast, Casalbordino to the east, Atessa to the south, Lanciano and Mozzagrogna to the west, and Santa Maria Imbaro to the northwest.
Its population is approximately 4,500.

Welcome to Paglieta, the village where history meets the horizon.
Nestled on a splendid hill in the province of Chieti, Paglieta is a unique natural terrace overlooking the picturesque Sangro Valley and the Trabocchi Coast. This ancient village preserves a medieval heart of quaint alleys, ancient watchtowers, and historic churches, all framed by the majestic profiles of the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains. A proud member of the National Association of Wine Cities and the Motor City Association, Paglieta offers a perfect blend of rural traditions, excellent food and wine, and warm Abruzzo hospitality.
Paglieta: a journey through time, amidst Frentani roots and medieval charm.
With origins dating back to pre-Roman times as an outpost of the Frentani, the municipality of Paglieta boasts an extraordinarily rich historical heritage. From the monumental structure of its ancient castle to the remains of the medieval walls, every corner of the historic center recounts centuries of cultural transition, including the historic Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. Visiting the village means losing yourself among its religious architecture—such as the historic churches of Santa Maria Assunta and San Canziano—and rediscovering the local identity through the Museum of Popular Traditions, guardian of the memory and folklore of this land.

Paglieta offers a rich itinerary that combines the charm of a medieval village with the historical memory of the Gustav Line, the German defensive line of World War II that stood right along the Sangro River.
What to see in Paglieta (The Village)
Torre della Porta and Medieval Walls: The ancient and imposing entrance to the castle dating back to the 13th century.
Belvedere of Piazza Roma: A panoramic terrace with spectacular views of the Sangro Valley and the sea.
Church of Santa Maria Assunta: The main religious building housing important works of sacred art.
Museo delle Tradizioni Popolari Nelli-Polsoni: An exhibition space to discover rural culture and ancient local crafts.
Activities and Itineraries on the Gustav Line
During the Battle of the Sangro, Paglieta found itself at the center of the war front and suffered severe damage. Today, this history can be retraced through specific activities:
1. Historical Trekking "On the Gustav Line": Guided excursions on foot or by mountain bike connecting Paglieta to Torino di Sangro. The trails allow you to walk through woods and hills where trenches and military outposts once stood.
2. Commemorative Stones and War Memorial: In the town center, in Piazza Martiri Lancianesi, stands the monument dedicated to the civilian and military victims of the fighting of 1943.
3. Visit the immediate surroundings: A few minutes' drive away is the Sangro River War Cemetery (in Torino di Sangro), the British military cemetery where the Allied soldiers who fought to liberate this specific area of the valley lie buried.
