The historic centre of Atessa offers many points of interest: the ancient Cathedral of San Leucio and other churches; the Sassu Museum; the city gates and walls; the characteristic "ruelle" (main streets), and the Nativity Scene Museum...
Atessa boasts several beautiful churches: Santa Croce, the Madonna Immacolata della Cintura, and the Madonna Addolorata, which house the famous papier-mâché statues by the Falcucci brothers, renowned 19th-century papier-mâché artists. Of particular interest are the Pulpit and the wooden Choir of the Cathedral of San Leucio: two exquisite 18th-century wooden works, carved from walnut and created by carvers from the renowned local workshop of the Mascio Brothers around 1769. The Cathedral also houses the Treasure of San Leucio and the rib of the Dragon defeated by San Leucio. The story of the union of the two Lombard villages of Ate and Tixa, hence the name "Atessa," harks back to a very ancient legend linked to the city's patron saint, Saint Leucio of Alexandria. It developed precisely during the late Lombard period (9th century), as evidenced by the foundation of the church of San Leucio around this time and the immediate veneration of the saint by the citizens.
In Atessa, you'll also find the theatre named after Antonio Di Jorio (a famous musician and native of Atessa), declared a national monument. The Antonio di Jorio Municipal Theatre is one of the city of Atessa's most precious jewels. Built inside a building of historical and artistic importance, it was the site of a convent founded by the Dominican order in the 13th century. Its construction dates from 1863 to 1911 and was restored by architect Paolo Marconi between 1984 and 1988.
The theatre hosts a very important season of prose and dialect drama, as well as being a venue for magnificent concerts.
Atessa boasts, especially in the summer, a programme of lively and interesting events and festivals, such as: Corti Antiche, Festa degli Squacciafichere, Sagra delle Pallotte di Capra, as well as the patronal festivals held from August 15th to 19th and dedicated to the patron saint San Leucio, Sant'Emidio, San Rocco, and the Immaculate Virgin Mary. During the Christmas holidays, the historic centere also comes alive with events and markets.
There are numerous religious festivals, including the Good Friday procession and the re-enactment of the Passion of Jesus Christ, which has become part of the European circuit.
Atessa hosts the weekly market on Thursday mornings in the historic centre and on Sunday mornings in Piazza Abruzzo; It boasts numerous restaurants offering traditional dishes, renowned wineries such as Cantine Spinelli, and ancient artisanal liqueur and nougat producers such as Piretti and Totaro. The famous herbal liqueurs are San Pasquale and Vallaspra, which owe their names to the locality of Vallaspra, where the Convent of San Pasquale is located.
With a beautiful walk or bike ride, you can visit the Convent of San Pasquale in Vallaspra (Convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli) in Atessa (CH). The name Vallaspra, meaning "rough valley," suggests the uniqueness of a wild and barren nature, but also the legacy of a historical and religious history with long periods of splendor and apostolate.
