Fara San Martino: The Pasta Capital of the World

Nestled in the heart of the Maiella National Park, Fara San Martino is a magical village where nature meets gastronomic excellence.

Known worldwide as the Pasta Capital of the World, the town owes its fame to its celebrated historic pasta factories, which exploit the pure waters of the Verde River springs to create a unique and inimitable product. But Fara San Martino isn't just about flavor. It's a paradise for adventure and history lovers. Crossing the spectacular and narrow San Martino Gorges, you enter a breathtaking valley that houses the evocative remains of the ancient Monastery of San Martino in Valle.

Among medieval alleys, authentic traditions, and unspoiled nature, Fara San Martino offers an unforgettable travel experience, combining excellent flavors and landscapes to explore.

Places Not to Miss (Culture and History)

San Martino Gorges: One of the most spectacular canyons in Abruzzo. The initial passage is extremely narrow (about 2 meters) and leads to a monumental valley.

Abbey of San Martino in Valle: An ancient medieval monastery carved into the rock, buried by floods for centuries and recently brought to light.

Springs of the Verde River: A relaxing natural area where the pure water flows from the rock. It's the secret that makes the local pasta so special.

Medieval Village (Terra Vecchia): The historic district of the town, characterised by narrow streets, stone houses and an atmosphere of times gone by. Gastronomic Experiences (Food Experience)

Historical Pasta Factory Tour: Discover where world-famous pasta (such as De Cecco and Delverde) is made and purchase artisanal shapes directly from local outlets.

Tasting of Typical Dishes: Try "Maccheroni alla Chitarra" with mutton sauce or dishes featuring Maiella truffles at the village restaurants.

The main church in the historic center of Fara San Martino is the Church of San Remigio, located a short distance from the ancient Terravecchia district, on the characteristic square commonly known as Piano dei Santi.

History: Its foundation originally dates back to the 13th century. It has been the village's parish church since the late 1500s. Exterior: It features a tripartite Baroque façade with a distinctive bell gable on the left side.

Interior: Divided into three naves, it houses the village's most important art collection. Standout features include the large gold-background mosaics in the apse area created in the last century, the canvas of the Circumcision by the 18th-century painter Antonio Di Campli, and the altarpiece of the patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua.

Connection to the Monastery: The church's sacristy houses precious archaeological finds from excavations at the nearby and famous Monastery of San Martino in Valle. Other historic churches in the center or surrounding area:

Church of the Madonna del Suffragio: An 18th-century chapel adjacent to the Church of San Remigio, characterized by a simple ashlar façade and an ancient sundial.

Church of the Santissima Annunziata: Located right in the heart of the historic streets of the Terra Vecchia district.

Excursions in Fara San Martino: Gorges, Springs, and Trekking on the Maiella

The surrounding area is a paradise for lovers of trekking in Abruzzo and wild nature. The main natural attractions include:

The Springs of the Verde River

A pleasant and easy walk of about a kilometer, ideal for families. The path is bordered by a wooden fence and winds through waterfalls, canals, and lush vegetation. The San Martino Gorges and the Rock Monastery

Continuing along the trail, you reach the spectacular San Martino Gorges, a narrow natural passage enclosed by towering rock walls. Immediately after the gorge are the remains of the Monastery of San Martino in Valle, a Benedictine jewel nestled in the rock. Uncovered by archaeological excavations, it now features an entrance courtyard, a chapel, a portico, and a church with decorated bas-reliefs.

Trekking to Monte Amaro

The gorges mark the beginning of a valley approximately 14 kilometers long with an elevation gain of 2,400 meters. Climbing through the Santo Spirito Valley, the Macchia Lunga Valley, and the Cannella Valley, experienced hikers can reach the summit of Monte Amaro (2,793 meters), the second highest peak in the Apennines after Gran Sasso.

Fara San Martino-Palombaro Nature Reserve

A protected area of exceptional biodiversity value in Abruzzo. It is characterized by extensive stands of mountain pine, beech forests, and centuries-old black pines. Looking up, it is not uncommon to spot golden eagles and peregrine falcons in flight.
